In the case of Estemirova v. Russia the Court found a violation of the right to life in connection with the abduction and murder of the well-known human rights activist Natalia Estemirova. The Court also found that the Russian Government had failed to comply with their obligation to furnish it with the necessary facilities for the examination of the case.

The Court held that the applicant, the victim’s sister, had been unable to prove any State involvement in the abduction and murder, but the Russian Government’s failure to provide a full copy of the criminal case file to the Court had undermined its ability to assess the quality of the investigation.
